BACOLOD CITY, Dec. 22 — Al Orolfo has been installed regional director of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Region 18 or the Negros Island Region (NIR).

The installation rites, attended by DENR Undersecretary for Field Operations Demetrio Ignacio and Assistant Undersecretary Mars Amaro, was held Monday at the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) here.

DENR Regional Directors Jim Sampulna of Region 6 and Isabelo Montejo of Region 7 turned over the symbolic key of work and financial plan to Orolfo, whose last assignment was with DENR Central Office.

He was formerly assigned as regional executive director for Protected Area, Wildlife and Coastal Management in Eastern Visayas.

“NIR is a pioneering region in terms of “one island-one diversity” thus it is challenging to head,” Orolfo said.

"We need to bring together both Negros provinces by building more bridges of development,” Orolfo said, adding that he has still to further study pressing crucial issues in the region involving the agency.

Ignacio pointed out that the designation of Orolfo took effect last December 15, but the operational function of DENR-NIR will officially start on January 1 next year.

He added that initially all the staff to be utilized by the new region will come from PENRO-Negros Occidental because there is no time to hire new people for the meantime.

Thus, provincial section heads will concurrently head the responsibility for the regional office and PENRO will also temporarily served as regional office, Ignacio added.(PNA)
