ILOILO CITY, Dec. 22 -– The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) 6 here is urging the public to be safety-conscious to avoid fire incidents especially this holiday season.

This, after the two big fire consecutively broke out in a commercial establishment and residential place in Iloilo City, Monday.

BFP regional director Senior Superintendent Lindy Lauzon said that they are currently strengthening their program ‘Oplan Paalala’ which informs the public to be extra conscious in the prevention of fire.

“There is a lot of information dissemination that our operating units are doing,” Lauzon said.

The operating units of BFP in Western Visayas are also on red alert since December 15 in preparation for the holiday season.

Lauzon said that all BFP personnel are with a 100 percent attendance and all the equipment and respond units are already in place.

He pointed out that frequency of alarms in Panay Island has increased this year and 65 percent of the fire incidents are mainly accidental in nature.

“Fires are usually caused by human failure that is why we are always reminding them to be safety conscious,” Lauzon said.

“There is no such thing as an effective fire prevention campaign unless we don’t get the full cooperation of the public,” he added. (PNA)
