MANILA, Dec. 1 — Chairman Emerson Carlos of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Tuesday defended the PNP-Highway Patrol Group's (HPG) for installing barriers near the EDSA Kamuning flyover in Quezon City that caused inconvenience to motorists from East Avenue and Timog Avenue.

Carlos said some motorists from East Avenue and Timog Avenue could not merge traffic with the other private vehicles on EDSA after the PNP-HPG installed the plastic barriers below the southbound leg of Kamuning flyover over the weekend.

Carlos asked the public to give the HPG some time to fine tune the road scheme.

"Let's give (the HPG) some time. Kahit naman 'yung magagandang programa natin at the start talagang titignan muna natin," he told reporters after the MMC meeting held at MMDA office in Makati City.

He said traffic congestion on EDSA Kamuning went from moderate to light after the installation of the barriers.

Carlos said motorists were forced to use the outer lanes of EDSA since the inner lanes have been blocked by the barricades.

For his part, PNP-HPG head Chief Supt. Arnold Gunnacao expect a heavier traffic situation along EDSA in the coming days.

Gunnacao said that based on the information gathered by the MMDA, around 120 motor vehicles per hour are regularly passing the EDSA .

He also sees that the volume of the vehicles will triple this coming holiday season.

To ease up traffic congestion in EDSA, Gunnacao advised the motorist to take the alternate routes or Mabuhay lanes.

He said that 70 percent of Mabuhay Lanes are already cleared from obstruction.

Gunnacao said motorists are yet to feel its effect of their efforts to fully attain their objective, which is to lessen the traffic situation along EDSA. (PNA)
