MANILA, Oct. 22 (PNA) — Cargill, an international producer and marketer of food, agricultural, financial and industrial products and services, is eyeing to invest in the poultry sector in the Philippines.

Cargill Asia Pacific Region Chair Alan Willits told reporters on Thursday that there is an opportunity for the company in Philippine market for poultry production.

“We’re looking in getting into new things like poultry in the Philippines. We don’t have any presence here in the Philippines at this point of time (in poultry sector). So that would be an area where we hope to make an investment in the near future,” said Willits adding that the company has significant presence in china and Thailand in the poultry sector.

He mentioned that the company is still planning the structure of its investment in the poultry sector considering the business model, location, and the poultry supply chain here.

Cargill’s investment for fully integrated poultry business in china which involves chicken production up to processing amounted to US$ 300 million.

In Thailand, Cargill is into chicken processing while commissioning the chicken production to a third party.

“For the Philippines, we will not be displacing those in the wet market but we will cater to high-end market,” Willits said pointing out that the company is targeting to supply to fast food chains and other business establishments.

He mentioned that the demand for poultry products in the Philippine market remains high as there is a deficit in this sector particularly during holiday seasons.

“There’s a number or different that ways we can pursue this in the Philippines. We hadn’t actually decided yet,” he noted.

“We see interesting growth opportunity. We do think our capabilities are in the further processing in terms of innovation, but exactly how we plan our invest is still under study,” he added.

Cargill has presence in animal nutrition in the country which can complement to its future poultry business facility.

The company owns and manufacture four feed mills in the country in Villasis, Pangasinan, Baliuag and Pulilan, Bulacan, and Villanueva, Misamis Oriental.

Aside from animal nutrition, Cargill has copra crushing plant in General Santos City producing crude coconut oil and copra meal for domestic and export markets as well as a carageenan production plant in Canlubang, Laguna.

Cargill is celebrating its 150th anniversary in business this year. It started its business in the Philippines in 1947 which the country became Cargill’s first office in Asia. (PNA)
