MANILA, Sept. 21 — The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines- National Secretariat for Social Action (CBCP-NASSA) and Caritas Internationalis offered prayers and solidarity to the people affected by the earthquake that rocked Chile last week.

“We at the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines-National Secretariat for Social Action-Justice and Peace (CBCP-NASSA)/ Caritas Philippines, express our deepest solidarity with the Church and people of Chile,” said Bishop Rolando Tria Tirona, National Director of CBCP-NASSA in a letter to Bishop Pedro Mario Ossandon Buljevic, President of Caritas Chile.

At the same time, he assured that they are ready to provide assistance in providing food and materials needed for the survivors of the tremor.

“We are pledging our prayers and solidarity for your people and the work of the Church, and through the Caritas Internationalis, we pledge our support for the immediate and medium term food and material needed for the relief and rehabilitation of the affected communities, as well as for the capacity-building of the Church institution and staff to strengthen the communities,” Tirona said.

He added, “Our hearts and prayers go especially to the affected families and communities in the streets, those in uncertainty searching for family members, those in need of basic services and shelter, as well as victims and their families.”

The Catholic prelate noted that the support that will be given by the Philippine Church is a way of giving back the help that were provided to Filipinos when the country was hit by super typhoon Yolanda in November 2013.

“We still remember when our people were in emergency situation after Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) ploughed through our country nearly two years ago, we felt the support of the Caritas Internationalis and Member Organizations worldwide through solidarity message and concrete support,” he said.

An 8.3 magnitude earthquake struck Chile on Sept. 16 that damaged homes and businesses. The earthquake was followed by series of tremors/ aftershocks and tsunami. (PNA)
