POEA warns against illegal recruiters on the internet

ILOILO CITY, Sept. 10 — The director of the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) in Western Visayas (POEA-6), Rhea Calantas, has again warned job seekers consulting social network sites by specifying clear boundaries between going directly to the POEA and looking up work advertisements in the internet.

She stressed that the former offers legitimate information on different recruitment agencies and the types of work available particularly for overseas placement while the latter has proved to be abounding in fraudulent recruitment companies.

There has been evidence to support reports that many applicants have had run-ins with illegal recruiters via network sites, some even persuaded to pay fees in return for nothing as it turned out the agencies did not exist.

To keep recruitment syndicates at bay, applicants are advised strongly to check on the status of recruitment agencies through their cell phone links with the POEA, or visit any POEA office spread across the country, Calantas said. (PNA)
