CEBU CITY, Sept. 1 — The University of Cebu (UC) collegiate table tennis team made history after winning the first table tennis title of the 10th Universiti Technologi Mara (UiTM) International Sports Fiesta last Saturday in Kuala Lumpur, malaysia.

The Cebuano team beat host team malaysia 3-1 in the finals to win the title.

The team was made up of Dannel Jay Tormis, Val Stephen Jaca, Lemuel Agbon, Herby Vince Betarmos, Fausto Zeus Comaingking and David Samuel Maneja. They are joined by Lezlie Agbon, Jerny Kaye Pepito Athena Comaingking, Diana Oliverio and Jeramae Saromines.

In the game, UC lost to Malaysia, 1-3 in the first men’s singles but bounced back after winning the women’s singles 3-0.

They then swept the men’s doubles, 3-1, and then blanked Malaysia in the women’s doubles, 3-0, to seal the win.

UC head coach Jessica Jawad-Honoridez was overwhelmed by the victory especially since this was the first time table tennis was included in the list of events in the sports festival.

“This is the first time that the table tennis event was included in the sports fiesta and fortunately we became the first champion. I am so happy with the win,” said Honoridez.

Honoridez said that she had always felt a sense of pride at the thought of representing the country and UC in the tournament participated by five other countries.

The team was also backed by the Cebu Provincial Sports Commission and the Cebu City Sports Commission.

“We are so proud to bring the name of UC in the tournament. We took pride in being from UC. The experience was so amazing. We are thankful for all that believed in the team and supported us, ” said Honoridez.

The tournament was joined by eight teams coming from Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand.

This was the second international tournament that UC joined this year. The first one was the University Games in South Korea last July.

September will be a busy month not just for the team but the table tennis community as well.

They will be taking part in the Cebu Schools Athletics Foundation (Cesafi) table tennis tournament on September 4; the Milo Little Olympics in Iloilo on Sept. 11; and the 24th Jawad Cup on Sept. 19. (PNA)
