CEBU CITY, Aug. 31 — The Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) cancelled a protest rally set Monday at the Plaza Independencia near the Cebu City port after its national leadership announced it is ending its nationwide protests that started Thursday.

INC members, some coming from as far as Bohol and Negros Oriental, were already at the INC main church on Gen. Maxilom Avenue in Cebu City when local ministers announced the protest will not push through.

Busloads of INC members arrived in the area starting early morning Monday.

Local INC officials said the protest was expected to gather at least 20,000 church members in Central Visayas.

They were supposed to march from the INC church to the Plaza Independecia and hold a vigil there to protest against Justice Secretary Leila de Lima.

Cebu City traffic officials said traffic has started to buildup near the INC church and on Gorordo Avenue Monday morning even if a holiday was observed on Monday.

Cebu City Traffic Operations Chief Joy Tumulak said the traffic eased by noon after the INC members went home.

He said they deployed some 50 traffic enforcers to supervise traffic flow during the march.

But the enforcers were redeployed in traffic bottlenecks elsewhere in the city after the INC announced the protest was cancelled. (PNA)
