MisOcc gov wants to further reduce the malnutrition rate

OROQUIETA CITY, Misamis Occidental, Aug. 10 -– Governor Herminia Ramiro, who chairs the Provincial Nutrition Council, wanted that the malnutrition rate of this province to be further reduced.

This, despite this province’ malnutrition prevalent rate declined from 10.33 percent in 2013 to 1.22 percent in 2014.

Ramiro’s desire was announced by Provincial Nutrition Action Officer Marichu Tijing during the “Walk for a Cause,” the 41st Nutrition Month culmination activity on Saturday in this province.

At least PHP20,000 was raised during the “Walk for a Cause” that will be donated to a liver cancer patient from this city.

The activity was joined by elementary, high school and college students, soldiers, policemen, national and local government employees, and members of civil society organization as well as people’s organization.

Vice Gov. Aurora Virginia Almonte has challenged every Misamisnons to do daily exercises aside from maintaining good nutrition to live a healthy life.

Almonte cited a study conducted by Dr. Renzo Guinto, a consultant of the International Organization for Migration and Department of Health (DOH), that one out of four Filipinos are hypertensive and one out of four are obese.

She also cited studies by the Philippine Cancer Society (PCS) and the World Health Organization (WHO) that showed nine Filipinos were diagnosed with cancer; 61 died with diabetes; five died with respiratory disease; 276 died with heart disease; and, one died with stroke in every nine minutes in 2010.

Dr. Rachel Micarandayo, provincial health officer, said that the priority focus of Ramiro, through the governor’s “Go Hermie program,” is the practice of healthy lifestyle aside from maintaining good nutrition.

The Misamisnons, the majority of whom are low-income and poor farmers, has been encouraged to engage in backyard gardening by planting nutritious vegetables.

The Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS) of this provinces 14 towns were also tasked to serve as role models of the backyard gardening.

The celebration of the 41st Nutrition Month in anchored on the theme: “Timbang Iwasto sa Tamang Nutrisyon at Ehersisyo.”

The provincial government held the culmination activity on Saturday although Nutrition Month is celebration every July. (PNA)
