QC gov't to conduct breastmilk-gifting activity on Aug. 5

August 4, 2015 5:40 am· Comments Off on QC gov't to conduct breastmilk-gifting activity on Aug. 5

By Leilani S. Junio

MANILA, July 31 (PNA) — As part of the celebration of Breastfeeding Month in August, the Quezon City government is conducting a breastmilk-gifting activity dubbed as “Alay na Gatas Ko, Sagip sa Buhay Mo” on Aug. 5.

QC Mayor Herbert M. Bautista and Vice Mayor Joy Belmonte will lead City Hall officials during the opening rites of the breastmilk donation event at the SB Hall, 5th Floor of the Quezon City General Hospital (QCGH) at 8 a.m.

The breastmilk-gifting activity is a project of the QCGH Management led by Dr. Josephine Sabando, QCGH director.

The QCGH is also offering incentives for those who will be breastmilk donors in the form of free hospital service, depending on the amount of donated breastmilk.

For instance, a 500-ml breastmilk gift entitles a donor to a free consultation at QCGH.

Aside from the breastmilk-donating activity, breast pumps will be turned over to seven QC Health Department Lying-In Clinics to encourage more breastfeeding mothers to donate their breastmilk to babies in need, especially those in critically-ill condition.

Among the lying-in clinics that will serve as milk depots are the San Francisco Lying-In, Batasan Hills Lying-In, Betty Go Belmonte Lying-In, Murphy Lying-In, Kamuning Lying-In, Arsenio Maximo Lying-In, and Sta. Lucia Lying-In.

The breastmilk that will be donated will be processed through the so-called pasteurization procedure before it will be dispensed to babies.

At present, QC has 500 breastfeeding support groups composed of volunteers from different barangays that are willing to assist mothers who encounter problems in breastfeeding their babies.

Hepatitis-B screening will also be conducted during the QCGH event, especially for mothers donating breastmilk. The test aims to reduce the health risks associated with donated milk from sick mothers.

The city-owned and operated hospital launched last March the QC Breastmilk Bank project as a way of reducing the infant mortality rate in the city.

The establishment of the QC Breastmilk Bank is an offshoot of an ordinance principally authored by QC 5th District Councilor Julienne Alyson Rae V. Medalla in 2012.

Under the ordinance, the milk bank shall be operated on a non-profit basis but minimal processing fee shall be charged to cover for screening, processing and administrative costs.

The ordinance is in accordance with Republic Act No. 10028, otherwise known as the Expanded Breastfeeding Promotion Act of 2009. (PNA)
