ILOILO CITY, July 27 — The Iloilo Airport is proving to be a primary driver of the burgeoning Iloilo economy, and arguably has become one of the country’s best performing airports as testified by hard figures dished out by the Department of Tourism in Region 6 (DOT-6).

Atty. Helen Catalbas, DOT Region 6 director, compared statistical data of 2013 and 2014, and without a shadow of doubt formed a crystal clear mental picture of an airport facility raring to shoot upwards. In just two years of operation, the Iloilo Airport of International Standards has consistently delivered the goods and from the looks of it, 2015 promises to be a real winner by yielding stronger numbers, Catalbas said.

In 2013, there were 64 flights; and in 2014, 65 flights. For the 1st Quarter of 2015, flights both domestic and foreign have reached to 67. Passenger arrivals in 2013 totalled 26,871 while for 2014, total passengers coming in hit 27,154. Catalbas did not show latest figures, but was optimistic enough to say that the Iloilo Airport will continue to gain ground as additional flights are being contemplated this year.

The Iloilo Airport was built to receive international flights and can accommodate 1.6 million passengers in a year. The cargo terminal can handle 11,500 metric tons of freight, Catalbas said. (PNA)
