LAOAG CITY, June 30 — Carrying the similar campaign of eating the right food and proper diet through the years, the Nutrition Month celebration this year will focus on the different weight loss programs.

The Provincial Health Office in Ilocos Norte is set to kick-off the 41st Nutrition Month celebration on July 1, 2015 with the theme “Timbang Iwasto sa Tamang Nutrisyon at Ehersisyo” (Achieve proper weight through right nutrition and exercise).

An early morning fitness exercise featuring Zumba will be the launching activity of the PHO which will be led by the identified overweight in the community as the main participants to the event.

“We want to show that the key in achieving good health is through exercise talaga, there is no substitute to exercising regularly,” Elma Irapta, Provicial Nutrition Action Officer, said.

Aside from Zumba, the PHO also organized diet counseling to the identified overweight and underweight persons to guide them in their proper diet and food intake.

“We are used to conducting feeding program during nutrition month but this time, we will highlight the weight reduction program that will include diet counseling,” Irapta said.

Ilocos Norte has an increasing prevalence rate of overweight in pre-school children.

In 2014, the overweight rate climbed to 1.22 percent from 1.62 percent in the year 2010.

“Though the overweight incident is increasing in the province, it is not yet alarming, however, we have to address it as early as possible to correct their body weight,” said Irapta.

On July 23, the PHO will also conduct a Symposium on Obesity and Nutrition as a continuing program of the diet counseling, also part of the province’s nutrition month celebration.

Meanwhile, the PHO has recently concluded the Monitoring and Evaluation of Local Level Plan Implementation (MELLPI) with the members of the Provincial Nutrition Council (PNC).

The evaluation aims to assess the efficiency and effectiveness of Local Government Units (LGU) in planning and implementing local nutrition programs.

The PNC is set to conduct the MELLPI exit conference on July 3, 2015 and will give awards to the best performing LGUs on the nutrition month’s culminating program. (PNA)
