SEOUL, June 1 — South Korea's health ministry said Monday three new cases of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome have been confirmed, raising the total number of people diagnosed with the potentially fatal MERS virus to 18.

The latest infected people had been in the same hospital where the first patient diagnosed in the recent outbreak was staying.

The South Korean government has come under criticism for its slow responses to contain the virus after the first case was confirmed on May 20. (PNA/Kyodo)
