BACOLOD CITY, June 1 — About 260 local officials of Negros Occidental led by Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. gathered over the weekend in a dinner organized here by Mrs. Judy Araneta-Roxas, mother of Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Manuel "Mar" Roxas II.

The Roxas scion is being eyed as the standard bearer of the Liberal Party in the May 2016 presidential elections.

Mrs. Araneta-Roxas, who hails from Bago City, Negros Occidental, also attended a dinner party hosted by sugarcane planters here on Friday.

Marañon, who has openly supported Roxas’s bid for the presidency, said that officials who came to Saturday night's gathering had crossed party lines.

“Even if we have different political parties, we only want one thing – to put a Negrosanon in Malacañang,” the governor said.

“I appeal to all of you, leaders. Convince your friends, relatives and loved ones all over the country to vote for Mar," the governor told the local officials.

Marañon said that Roxas’s candidacy “is an opportunity of a lifetime,” adding that the DILG chief is untainted of corruption.

For her part, Mrs. Roxas, who hosted the dinner at the Aranetas’ ancestral house in Barangay 41 here, said: “Let’s not doubt in helping Mar get a seat in Malacañang. He can help Negros.”

“Like what the governor has said, I think we all want our own to be in Malacañang,” she added. “We want someone who has ambition and dream for Negros, which you also want.”

Lawmakers who attended the gathering were Congressmen Alfredo Benitez of the 3rd District, LP provincial chairman in Negros Occidental; Alejandro Mirasol of the 5th District; Leo Rafael Cueva of the 2nd District, and Evelio Leonardia of the Lone District of Bacolod City.

Mayors who came were Monico Puentevella of Bacolod, Isidro Zayco of Kabankalan City, Jose Montelibano of Silay City, Eric Saratan of Talisay City, Mayor Patrick Escalante of Cadiz City, Alfredo Marañon III of Sagay City, Oscar Montilla of Sipalay City, Mayor Jose Maria Alonso of Pontevedra, Cicero Borromeo of Candoni, Lourdes Escalante of Manapla, Enrique Montilla of Isabela, Hermilo Aguilar of Hinigaran, Emmanuel Aranda of Binalbagan, Ernesto Estrao of Hinobaan, Mario Magno of San Enrique, Araceli Somosa of Calatrava and Richard Jaojoco of Toboso.
