TUGUEGARAO CITY, April 29 — The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) region 2 has sought the assistance of the members of the Regional Nutrition Committee (RNC) in monitoring the implementation of the supplementary feeding program for preschool children enrolled in Day Care Centers.

Delia de Guzman, program coordinator of DSWD, said the fund allocated for each municipality of the region has been released by DSWD.

Some municipalities have already started implementing the feeding program, but others have failed to enforce it the program due to calamities.

De Guzman said that with the number of day care centers and in the absence of a task force to monitor the supplementary feeding program, DSWD could hardly ensure it's efficient implementation. The program targets all children aged 3 to 4 that are under the day care service.

“Each child is allotted 12.50 pesos per day for a hot meal, either in the form of a snack or lunch. The requirements for the food menu are iron fortified rice (i-rice) and viand- vegetables or any other available food that can be bought from their areas,” de Guzman said.

She also said that based on their monitoring, some LGUs bought noodle packs instead of i-rice and viands.

She advised day care workers to follow the menu guide that were distributed to them to ensure that foods served to the children are nutritious.

On the other hand, National Nutrition Council (NNC) Program Coordinator Rhodora Maestre expressed her willingness to provide assistance in monitoring the implementation of the program along with other agencies including the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA)and the Philippine Information Agency (PIA).

Maestre said the program was very laudable and it could help eradicate malnutrition among children; however, proper monitoring is required in order to ensure effectiveness of the program. (PNA)
