BUTUAN CITY, March 26 — The Police Regional Office in Caraga (Region 13) is ensuring the safe and secure travel of visitors and commuters to the region during the lenten season and summer vacation.

Supt. Martin M. Gamba, chief public information officer of the regional police here, said that the PNP have implemented its anti-criminality campaign dubbed as "Ligtas SUMVAC 2015" to ensure peace and order and public safety during the summer vacation.

"It is expected that during this period, closing of classes, celebrations of various occasions such as the lenten season, Philippine Veterans Week, Araw Ng Kagitingan, Labor Day, National Flag Day, town festivals, Flores de Mayo and other related activities, will draw tourists and other vacationers to the region starting this month until the month of May," Gamba said.

He added that large number of people will travel to various places, provinces and their hometowns to either spend vacation or visit families and relatives. Lots of tourists (local and foreign) are expected to visit the various tourist destinations here, enjoy the festivals and other summer events.

According to Gamba, the PNP as well as the other agencies here have anticipated the upsurge of commuters and travelers by land, air and sea which may result in traffic congestion and accidents and even robbery and street crimes.

The police, he said, have prepared against lawless elements and other terrorist groups who may initiate activities to embarrass the government and gain media mileage. "These will be looked upon as possible potential threat to tourists, visitors as well as VIPs who may visit the region," Gamba said.

Police Regional Office will involve the maximum deployment of personnel for the conduct of combat operations, combat patrols, check point and choke point operations, mobile and beat patrolling, intensify police presence, establish public assistance centers in all places of convergence and route safety marshals to deter and preempt plans and activities of criminal elements and other threat groups. The police will do it in close coordination with the AFP, the local government units, non-governmental organizations, civilian volunteer organizations and other stakeholders, Gamba said. (PNA)
