MANILA, March 17 (PNA) — Two members of the ruling Liberal Party (LP) at the House of Representatives on Tuesday said that despite the negative impact of the Mamasapano incident on the overall ratings of President Benigno S. Aquino III, people will see through this particular episode because of all the positive gains achieved by his administration.

Caloocan City Rep. Edgar Erice and Iloilo Rep. Jerry Treñas said the slump in the President’s ratings could be attributed to “very high emotions” especially in the aftermath of the said incident which left 44 Special Action Force (SAF) commandos, 18 Moro fighters and five civilians dead.

Treñas said a lot of good things that the Aquino administration has done already were eclipsed by what happened in Mamasapano but stressed that, ultimately, all will be clarified and people will see through all the issues of the day.

“This administration has done a lot, and like the stock market, there will be correction in the end,” he said.

Treñas cited the continuous economic growth the country has experienced under the Aquino administration as one of the greatest achievements of the President.

“For the first time in our political history, we were able to approve the Reproductive Health (RH) bill which several congresses cannot be approved. Tax collections were also increased. The gains of this administration are so much that it should not be overshadowed by this (Mamasapano) incident alone,” he said.

The Iloilo lawmaker likewise said that the results of the latest survey now would be of little bearing in the lead up to the 2016 national elections as it is still far away.

“May 2016 is more than a year from now so many things can happen. There are so many reforms that will be continued by this administration. His rating will go up and bring LP to victory,” Treñas said.

Meanwhile, Erice said he firmly believed that President Aquino broke no law regarding the Mamasapano operations and that, like his fellow LP member, the people’s trust would be regained due to the many achievements of the administration.

He also said that President Aquino’s endorsements for next year’s elections would be no kiss of death as his critics have been trumpeting.

“Despite the slump, his ratings are still high compared to past presidents who even got negative ratings in the last years of their terms. He still got a 30 + rating, so that is still high,” the Caloocan solon said.

Erice likewise said that there is no need for the President to apologize as there are different interpretations of the truth depending on what side of the political spectrum one is in.

“The truth can be viewed in so many angles. There is the truth as interpreted by the President’s allies and the truth according to his critics. So, if his critics think that the president violated any law, they are free to take legal actions or any available options that are available to them. Nobody’s preventing them,” he said.

“The Mamsapano issue is a temporary thing and the administration is doing everything to bring closure to the incident. The important thing is that we will just continue with the reforms and move on,” Erice said. (PNA)
