House committee on tourism approves DOT office for Negros Occidental

BACOLOD CITY, March 2 — The House committee on tourism approved the setting up of Department of Tourism (DOT) office for Negros Occidental.

“We’re getting a DOT in Negros Occidental,” this was confirmed by Bacolod City Rep. Evelio Leonardia after the committee hearing that deliberated House Bill 4702 which he filed.

The bill seeks to create a Negros Island Tourism Office that will coordinate the tourism efforts of the two provinces in the island.

After due deliberation, the committee on tourism approved a Negros Occidental office instead of an island-wide one, Leonardia said.

Bohol Rep. Rene Relampagos, committee chairman, and Cebu Rep. Gwendolyn Garcia advised Leonardia that since the Negros Island Region is still in the works, it would be more appropriate and practical to settle for a Negros Occidental office for now.

Leonardia said he saw the wisdom behind the recommendation.

“For one, this will be faster to pass through the legislative mill and we could have that island-wide office in due time,” he said.

It will still work towards promoting the one-island region tourism, a foot in the door, so to speak, the lawmaker said.

“We still continue to lobby for the one-island region. No man is an island, it is true, but Negros is an island and it can stand on its own," Leonardia said.

He added that a local DOT office would accelerate tourism regulation, development and promotion, and will report to the regional and national DOT office.(PNA)
