Export of 100 k/t chicken meat next year

TEHRAN, Feb. 24 — An Agriculture Jihad Minister deputy said it is predicted that 100 thousand tons of chicken meat will be exported next year, adding that currently over 2 million tons of chicken meat is being produced in the country of which about 65,000 tons is exported to the neighboring countries.

Hassan Rokni, in a meeting with General Bheki Cele, Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of South Africa, and his accompanying delegation said Iran is among the seventh chicken meat producers in the world.

He further remarked that in the past two years Iran has reached self-sufficiency in chicken production, adding that on the basis of the five-year economic development plan, increase in production of agricultural products is on the agenda so that the surplus production will be exported to applicant countries.

This year, he added, about 900,000 eggs were produced in the country of which over 60,000 tons were exported.

The official noted that annual production of red meat, mainly cow and sheep, amounts to about 800,000 tons, adding that due to religious faith pork is prohibited and thus is neither produced nor consumed in the country.

Ronki also said that about 100,000 tons of red meat is imported annually, but he added that domestic production has recently increased.

He pointed to the export of 500,000 tons of milk and dairy products last year and said Iran has surplus product in three protein products of chicken meat, egg and milk, portions of which are exported.

The official pointed to economic exchanges with South Africa in the field of ostrich and expressed the hope that talks will be finalized in this sector and bilateral cooperation will be continued in this regard.

During the meeting, the visiting side presented a report on the production of livestock products in South Africa and noted that livestock production in that country constituted 50 percent of agricultural products of which 17 percent belongs to the production of chicken meat.

South Africa is one of the major producers of red meat and at the same time one of the main importers of honey in the world. (PNA/IRNA)
