ILOILO CITY, Jan. 28 — This southern city is fast emerging as a tourist haven and there is a need for good and well-informed tour guides to show-off the city’s tourist sites and services.

This was stressed by city councilor Jason Gonzales in informing the whole membership of the city council about the satisfied reactions of several foreign tourists who availed of tour guiding services of some students recommended by the Iloilo City Community College (ICCC).

The three-year-old city government-owned college is offering a four year course on tourism management and the student tour guides are now in their third year.

Gonzales recommended that local tour and travel operators get their tour guides from the ICCC as an effective way of on-the-job training.

City councilor Nielex Tupas, chairman of the SP committee on tourism, stressed, however, that there must be proper coordination among the stakeholders on the accreditation of the tour guides and quality of tour services.

Tupas said there must be consistent mapping of tour destinations and services especially on heritage sites and structures, new destinations and food and accommodation. (PNA)
