CEBU CITY, Jan. 20 — Three contingents are vying as Cebu’s official representative to the Aliwan Festival in Pasay City in Metro Manila in April.

Sinulog Foundation Inc. (SFI) executive director Ricky Ballesteros said Cebu's official representative to the Aliwan Festival will either be Tribu Lumad Basakanon, Carcar City Division or the Tuburan National High School.

Lumad Basakanon landed in fifth place in the Sinulog free interpretation category while Carcar City and Tuburan got fourth and fifth place, respectively.

Ballesteros said Cebu’s representative to the Aliwan Festival will come from one of the runners-up because this year’s champion is not from Cebu.

“The one that will represent Sinulog for Aliwan should be a contingent from Cebu because out-of-town contingents will represent their own festival,” Ballesteros said.

Lumad Basakanon represented the Sinulog in the Aliwan last year and won.

The group was installed in the Aliwan Hall of Fame in 2008 after winning for three consecutive years, starting in 2006.

Ballesteros said SFI will monitor the dance routine of the chosen representative to ensure a win in the Aliwan.

“The crowd in Manila is expecting more from Sinulog every year, that's why we have to make sure that our representative can maintain the standard,” he said. (PNA)
