Iloilo rice production nearing 2013 harvest

ILOILO CITY, Jan. 6 –- Iloilo Provincial Agriculture Officer Dr. Ildefonso Toledo said that per their consolidation of reports Iloilo's rice production in 2014 is now nearing the 900,000 metric tons total harvest in 2013.

Toledo further said that although last year’s tropical storms Ruby and Seniang caused inconveniences and some damages to houses and infrastructures, the farmers here are somewhat thankful for it watered their rice farms.

The Iloilo agriculture officer also said that the forecasted El Nino phenomenon spared Iloilo last year, but that it’s still being anticipated until the end of the first quarter of 2015.

”We are still in the process of consolidating all reports about the first and second cropping harvests but our last counting was already around 700,000 metric tons,”Toledo said. Dr. Toledo hopes to finish the consolidation of reports by next week.

He said the one million metric tons they target to harvest in Iloilo province for a year still remains to be elusive up to now.

The province of Iloilo has a total area of 137,000 hectares devoted to palay planting. (PNA)
