RP national boxing coach sees potential in Negrenses (Sports)

BACOLOD CITY (PNA)- The just ended Philippine Youth Games-atang Pinoy national finals sees a bright hope for future Negrense boxersto the national team.

The assessment comes from RP national boxing coach Bago City- born Roel Velasco.

Velasco who has a short vacation here during the Batang Pinoy is the 1992 Barcelona Olympics bronze medalist and older brother of Mansueto “Onyok” Velasco, Jr., the 1996 Atlanta olympics silver medalist both in men 48 kilograms.

Velasco sees heart and eagerness among the Negrense boxers during the competition.

Among the Negrense boxers who won medals during the Youth Games were gold medalist Eduardo Lucenio Jr. of Escalante City –vacuum (28.1-30kg); silver medalists Dindo Sabillo of Bacolod City – powder (34.1 – 36kg), Welkent Jay Pucdol of Negros Occidental – light fly, and Alan Libo-on of Bago City – flyweight; and bronze medalists John Lorenz Torela of Sipalay City – kiddie (26-28kg), Robert Agupasa of Negros Occidental – vacuum (28.1-30kg), Jay Paul Bequiras of Negros Occidental –powder (34.1 – 36kg), Remo John Baconggon of Cadiz City – light mosquito (36-38kg), John Michael Lachica of Bacolod City –mosquito, and Rogelito Plomeda Jr. of Bago City – light fly.Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Chairman Richie Garcia also said hat future champions will come from the national youth games.

He pointed out this sports program, the country is harvesting talents for national pool and eventually for the national team.Garcia further said that these athletes who started at 15 years old and below would be ready in the next two to three years if provided enough exposures.(PNA)
