PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, Dec. 15 (PNA) -– The Department of Agriculture-Palawan Research and Experiment Station (DA-PRES) cited the Palawan Provincial Veterinarian’s Office (PVO) for its successful implementation of the Regional Rabies Prevention and Control Program.

The successful implementation led to the province being the only in the Philippines to have declared many municipalities rabies-free zones.

Dr. Juanito Pio Lledo, head of the PVO, said Monday that they received the special recognition on Dec. 9 from the DA-PRES during the celebration of its 61st anniversary.

Lledo said the PVO was particularly recognized for its effective and efficient implementation of the regional anti-rabies and control program, which led to the declaration of nine municipalities in Palawan as rabies-free zones.

The municipalities of Coron, Busuanga, Culion, Linapacan, Cagayancillo, Cuyo, Magsaysay, Araceli and Kalayaan were also awarded, he said.

Lledo said the process that a municipality should accomplish to be declared as rabies-free zone is to have a rabies control council, to have a program for regular vaccination of pet dogs, to have a dog pound, and should not have rabies or any record of it for two years.

He said that they have already submitted the necessary documents for the additional declaration of Balabac, Agutaya and Dumaran as rabies-free zones, which is expected to happen February next year.

If the declaration gets the thumbs up, Lledo said 12 municipalities in the province will now be free of rabies.

The awards and recognition day was also attended by Kalayaan Mayor Eugenio Bito-onon. (PNA)
