Cebu Capitol distributes satellite phones to LGUs

CEBU CITY, Dec. 7 – The Cebu provincial government on Saturday distributed a satellite phone to each town and city in the province as part of the preparation for typhoon "Ruby."

Each phone costs Php37,000, including its accessories, or a total of Php1.9 million for the entire package.

Each local government unit (LGU) was also given Php10,000 worth of pre-paid load.

Succeeding phone loads will be shouldered by the LGU.

Cebu Provincial Legal Officer Orvi Ortega said calls to Sun Cellular, Smart and Talk 'N Text subscribers cost Php24 per minute while calls to Globe and TM will be charged Php28 per minute.

Cebu Provincial General Services Office (PGSO) Chief Jone Sepe said the satellite phones will only be used during emergencies when facilities of telecommunication companies bog down as a result of a calamity.

This was one of the lessons learned during the Nov. 8, 2013 super typhoon "Yolanda," when telecommunication firms were non-operational in disaster-stricken areas.

The phones were only lent to the towns and component cities.

When Telco facilities are back to normal operations, the satellite phones will be collected back by the Capitol and will be stored at the PGSO for future emergency use. (PNA)
