Pangasinan ignites the football spirit in the first football tournament (Sports)

LINGAYEN, Pangasinan, Nov. 23 — Football was given the needed boost in Pangasinan when it hosted a two-day 1st Governor Amado T. Espino (GATE) Jr. 11-A-Side Football Cup starting Nov. 22.

Gov. Espino admits that football is his favorite sport and believes the Filipinos can excel well in this sport though they are relatively small in height.

Espino was the guest speaker during the opening of the tournament at the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center in Lingayen, participated in by 16 teams from Pangasinan and neighboring provinces.

"Small people are fast-runners and football players are running much of the game," he said as he vowed to support the development of football in the province.

Playing in the tournament that will end Sunday are Footballtese United of Candon, Ilocos Sur; Baguio United Football Club of Baguio City; Baguio City CARAA Team; Nueva Vizcaya Football Club; PSU Football Club Alumni; PSU Football Club Varsity; Amadeo Football Club, Pangasinan; Nigerian United Football Club, Pangasinan; Urdaneta City Football Club, Pangasinan; Tuguegarao Football Club; Bayambang National High School Football Club; Nueva Ecija Football Club; North Western University Football Club of Laoag City, Ilocos Norte; San Carlos City Football Club (international students), Pangasinan; Gaza Team, Dagupan City; Pangapisan North, Lingayen team.

Games are being played at the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center and Pangasinan State University (PSU), Lingayen open fields.

The football event was organized by the provincial government of Pangasinan in cooperation with Junior Chamber International-Lingayen Bagoong (JCI-LB) headed by Councilor Judy Vargas. (PNA)
