GUIUAN, Eastern Samar, Nov. 7 — Part of the government’s Build Back Better program is to build a road dike that would protect areas devastated by Typhoon "Yolanda" from future disasters, President Benigno S. Aquino III said here Friday.

Under the Tacloban-Palo-Tanauan Road Dike Project of the Department of Public Works and Highways, a road will be built four meters above sea level.

"Kapag bumuhos po ang ulan, magsisilbing dike ang mga kalsadang ito, at pipigilan ang pagragasa ng tubig at malawakang pagbaha sa komunidad," the President said in a speech when he visited Guiuan, Eastern Samar to mark the first year anniversary of the destruction caused by Typhoon Yolanda.

The project is expected to protect a 27-square-kilometer area, along with 29,000 houses, he said, adding that it will be coupled with other initiatives, such as the planting of mangrove trees.

Construction of the road dike will start next year, the President said. (PNA)
