DAGUPAN CITY, Nov. 6 — Dagupan City Nutrition Officer Leah Aquino estimated that P13 is needed daily for a malnourished child to be saved from malnutrition if he or she does not need any medical intervention.

Aquino said there are 1,667 children who were found to be severely and moderately malnourished in Dagupan City and need rehabilitation.

Therefore, at least P2.6 million is needed for all these kids to be rehabilitated and regain their normal weight, Aquino said when she defended the proposed budget of her office Wednesday before the Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP).

Aquino said her office is set to schedule a 120-feeding program for all the 1,667 children for them to regain their normal weight but added that for them to maintain their normal weight, their families must give them nutritious food when the supplementary feeding is over.

But the drawback, she said, is that these kids are from indigent families with little income, so there is a big probability the children may go back to being malnourished kids.

Aquino said this is the reason that in the feeding program under tne administration of Mayor Belen Fernandez, malnutrition is being attacked not only in terms of food preparation and selection, medical intervention and supplementary feeding but also livelihood.

She said the parents of the kids must have sources of income so that they will have the capacity to buy god food for their children.

At the same time, Aquino revealed that even if her office does nor have enough budget, several non-government organizations and even commercial companies are willing to partner with the city government in offering supplementary feeding to malnourished Dagupan kids.

She cited the Kabisig at Kalahi, the Pangasinan Medical Society, rotary clubs, Unilever and others that sponsored their own supplementary feeding program for malnourished children here. (PNA)
