BACOLOD CITY, Oct 9 (PNA) — Almost 150 amateur boxers in Negros Occidental are seeing action in the 5th Governor Alfredo G. Marañon Jr. Open Boxing Provincial Championships that kicked off Wednesday at the BAYS Center in this city.

The boxers, representing their respective districts, are competing in various weight categories until October 12.

Provincial Sports Coordinator Angel Verdeflor said this year’s staging of the tournament is in line with the governor’s thrust of promoting sports and providing opportunities for the youth to develop their skills.

It also aims to discover potential athletes who can represent the province, he added.

For his part, Bacolod City Mayor Monico Puentevella stressed the need for good sportsmanship among the youth as he encouraged them to continue their passion for boxing and be the future pride of the province.

ALA Boxing Cebu chairman Antonio Lopez Aldeguer also lauded the initiative of the provincial government for strengthening grassroots sports.

The opening rites was also attended by WBO light flyweight world champion Donnie Nietes, WBO Intercontinental super bantamweight champion Genesis Servania, and ABAP president Dodong Bascon.(PNA)
