Pro boxers sign up with Sonshine Sports Management, Pinol

DAVAO CITY, May 22 — Professional boxers led by world champion Edrin “The Sting” Dapudong will now be co-managed and co-promoted by the newly-formed Sonshine Sports Management Inc. (SSMI) with former North Cotabato Gov. Manny Piñol as the manager.

“This is a big step in Philippine sports,” said Gov. Piñol after the memorandum of agreement held Thursday at the Jose Maria College here.

Signing in behalf of SSMI was international evangelist Pastor Apollo Quiboloy. It was witnessed by lawyer Binggay Dureza-Aldevera and the invited local media including radio commentator and boxing aficionado Alejendro “Boy Bilaan” Acojedo of dxRD Sonshine Radio.

“We want to help our Filipino athletes not only the boxers but in all sports,” said Quiboloy, who also bared the on-going construction of the 65,000 seater Kingdome.

An initial budget of P1.5 billion was allotted for the construction of the world-class sports facility and it is expected to be finished in 2015 with an estimated total budget of P3 billion.

“We can now hold world championships here,” said Quiboloy, who added that he will assign one cable channel exclusively for sports only.

Aside from the reigning International Boxing Organization (IBO) superflyweight title-holder Dapudong, also under Boxing Organization (WBO) Oriental featherweight king Lorenzo “Thunderbolt” Villanueva, ex-WBO Asia Pacific bantamweight champion Rolando “Smooth Operator” Magbanua, ex-WBO Oriental mini-flyweight champion Rommel “Little Assasin” Asenjo, Roskie “Kapre” Cristobal and John Michael “Wangbu” Sarguilla .

Pinol is the manager of the fighters and will have the direct control and direction over the professional boxing career of the fighters. He will handle the day to day affairs of the boxers and their training and shall have the sole authority to enter the agreements in behalf of the fighters.

SSMI, on the other hand, will actively promote the professional boxing events and its initial promotion is set on June 21 at the Almendras gym featuring Sonny Boy Jaro against a Thai boxer. (PNA)
