LEGAZPI CITY, April 8 — Mario Maglinao requires himself to at least jog every morning to boost his endurance, aside from avoiding vices that would weaken his immune system.

“I hate vices such as cigarette but I also try wine because our body needs at least a little of alcohol at times.” Maglinao said.

He considers himself as “oragon” in advocating for a healthy lifestyle.

Oragon is Bicol slang for somebody who is considered as a fighter with determination and strength to face the consequences of life.

On Saturday, he proved he was right after maintaining the title of overall champion in Mayon 360º Ultra Marathon in Daragang Magayon Festival 2014.

The 26-year-old runner, also known as Super Mario, broke his own record last year.

He won the race by clocking six hours, 10 minutes and 59 seconds in 2013 and this time, he ran for only six hours, one minute and 9 seconds.

The race started at 4:00 a.m. from Peñaranda Park passing through the barangays surrounding Mayon Volcano, which is approximately 80 kilometers in circumference, with a cutoff time of 16 hours or 8:00 pm at the same park.

The two-time champion said that before running in Mayon 360º, he ate corn as what a Kenyan runner, who became the overall champion before him, did.

The Kenyan, placed only second to him in this year’s race.

He admitted that after reaching 45 kilometers, he stopped and had a massage because of muscle cramps.

“Thank you, God, for a very nice day today, thank you for my loving wife, Gina Maraña, and my friends and relatives for their support. I am blessed with all the people around me — and now, I got a first place,“ Malinao said.

Super Mario is a native of Pilar, Sorsogon, but he now manages his own business in Barangay Rizal, Legazpi City.

Since college he has been an active athlete who has competed and been named champion in several marathons in the Bicol Meet and the State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association from year 2005 until he graduated Bachelor of Science in Physical Education, Sports and Development in the Bicol University.

The Mayon 360º Ultra Marathon was divided into three stages: solo 80k, two-man relay to run 40k and four-man relay for 20k each.

For solo 80k, Maglinao was named as overall champion, 6:01:09; Martin Balaybo, 1st runner-up, 6:12:55, and Eugene “Bong” Postrado, 2nd runner-up, 6:18:59.

The event was sponsored by the Jaycees International Legazpi, Daraga and Dawani chapters.(PNA)
