MANILA, April 8 — To ensure that the sea going public will be safe this Holy Week, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) on Tuesday announced it has placed all its units nationwide on "heightened alert".

Cmdr. Armand Balilo, PCG spokesman, said they will be working in conjunction with the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) and local police to safeguard travelers who will be going to the provinces once the holiday goes on high gear.

He added that they will be assisted in this security task by operatives from the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA), Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) and members of the PCG Auxiliary.

These operatives will ensure that no overloading will take place aside from preventing attempts to smuggle illegals drugs, weapons and other prohibited items aboard ship.

Aside from this, the presence of authorities will provide adequate response force should a maritime emergency occur.

Balilo said their "heightened alert" will last until the end of Holy Week. (PNA)
