CEBU CITY, Feb. 26 (PNA) — Ricardo Cardinal Vidal, who retired as Cebu archbishop four years ago, has expressed his elation over his latest award, the Lifetime Achievement Award bestowed by the Cebu City Government in its 77th Charter Day anniversary.

"The first one I was named son of the city. But before that I was named a son of the province,” Cardinal Vidal said.

”Now is another award that we do not know exactly why. When you are growing old, it seems that there's so much award to give. What's important is that we want to know the answer," the amused Vidal said.

In December 2010, he was recognized by the national government through Senate Resolution 306 and was followed by House Resolution 593, for his service to the people of Cebu in providing spiritual leadership and inspiration.

In Cebu, Vidal was awarded the Order of Lapu-Lapu, the highest award given by the Cebu Provincial Government.

Vidal has been declared as an adopted son of the cities of Cebu and Talisay.

In 2009, the University of the Visayas (UV) in Cebu City conferred on Vidal the honorary degree of Doctor of Humanities.

Vidal, a native of Mogpog, Marinduque, stayed at a private residence in Cebu even after he retired as archbishop last October 15, 2010.

He was replaced by Palo, Leyte Archbishop Jose Palma.

Cardinal Vidal now bears the official title “Cebu Archbishop Emeritus.”

Vidal arrived in Cebu in 1981 when he was named the coadjutor archbishop, assisting then Cebu Archbishop Julio Cardinal Rosales whom he replaced the following year. (PNA)
