Solon proposes environmental education for Filipino students

MANILA, Feb. 19 — A lady lawmaker is seeking to institutionalize environmental education among Filipino students in the kindergarten and elementary levels.

Rep. Linabelle Ruth Villarica (4th District, Bulacan) filed House Bill 3724, which provides that the State must initiate novel approaches in education to train children to preserve and control the environment, and prepare them for the inevitable climate change.

“It is imperative to educate our children in their early years that lifestyle and technology choices have to be adjusted,” Villarica said.

The solon said the measure seeks to instruct young children on the need to develop a sense of responsibility towards environment.

“This will prepare them to address more challenging issues on the subject as they mature to become pro-active citizens of this country,” she said.

In filing the measure, Villarica cited a study conducted by the Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which found out that human influence on climate change is clear.

Villarica explained that when petrol is used to power cars and electricity to energize individual homes, carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere and adversely affects its absorptive capacity.

The lady lawmaker added that as the world population increases, as it is expected to reach 10 billion by 2050, the atmosphere would gradually deplete its capacity to absorb greenhouses gases.

The bill directs the Department of Education (DepEd) to ensure the conduct of environmental education for all students in the kindergarten and elementary levels.

The instructional module shall cover but not be limited to recycling, energy efficiency, conservation and climate change.

Under the measure, the Secretary of Education is mandated to incorporate such module in the existing curricula and shall promulgate rules and regulations necessary to implement the provisions of this Act. (PNA)
