MANILA, Feb 18 (PNA) — Malacanang on Tuesday said it did not receive any e-mail from Michael Christian Martinez’s mother requesting for financial aid from the government to meet the expense of preparations for the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

Maria Teresa Martinez, the lone Filipino figure skater Olympian’s mother, earlier said in reports that she was certain if President Benigno S. Aquino III received her email, she would not be ignored.

Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) Secretary Herminio Coloma, in a Palace briefing, raised the issue in reaction to reports that an e-mail was sent to the address listed on the Office of the President site: op@president.gov.ph administered by the PCOO.

Reports also said that an e-mail from Mrs. Martinez was also sent to officials of the state-run newswire Philippines News Agency (PNA).

“I asked my staff in charge of the website to verify that (claim) and according to their reports, it was not received in the email (inbox),” Coloma said in Filipino. “They offered the possibility that it went to spam.”

Spam is described as electronic junk mail or unsolicited, often commercial, message transmitted through the Internet as a mass mailing to a large number of recipients.

“By protocol, my staff does not open the e-mails in spam because of its implications in the security of the whole website,” the PCOO chief noted.

Nevertheless, he said that the country is still proud of Martinez’s success and hopes for more success here and abroad.

“There’s a groundswell of support which as we have previously stated we hope will generate enough momentum for him to qualify for the next Olympics,” Coloma said.

“He is young, he is skilled and he has a huge potential to be an Olympic medallist in a sport that is uncommon here but he has natural skill and ability that can earn more honor for the country,” he added.

He also assured that every letter or e-mail sent to the PCOO is immediately being sought action to and that his staff checks the official e-mail account every day. (PNA)
