CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Feb. 13 -– The police apprehended one of the three suspects in the stealing of cable wires of telephone companies here, officials of the province’s Misamis Oriental Telephone Company (Misortel) said on Wednesday.

Engr. Rene Guingguing, Misortel’s assistant manager, said that the suspect, a minor, was brought to the local police station in Carmen, Cagayan de Oro City, for investigation.

He said that the suspects stole the telephone cables installed under the Marcos Bridge last week, which resulted in the stoppage of telephone services in most part of Barangays Carmen, Kauswagan, Bonbon, and Bayabas.

Guingguing said that the internet connections of direct subscriber line were also cutoff in the areas from Barangay Bulua to the municipal town of Alubijid in Misamis Oriental’s west district.

According to Guingguing, the thieves cut about 110 meters of three kinds of cable (fiber optic and two different copper wires) valued at some P400,000.

He said that cable wire theft was one of the problems of telecommunication companies here since the wire, usually made of bronze, fetches a higher value in the “junk market.”

A kilo of bronze is worth P 300 making cable wires of telecommunication companies a favorite target of thieves, Guingguing added.

He said that the Misortel has adopted measures to counter cable wire thief which resulted in the arrest of one of the suspects here.

Guingguing said that the communication lines in the areas where telephone and internet connections were cutoff would be remedied this week as Misortel fast track the repair of broken communication lines.

The Misortel’s service areas covers Cagayan de Oro to Alubijid in western Misamis Oriental and Cagayan de Oro to Jasaan in eastern Misamis Oriental. Misortel has an extension office in Gingoog City. (PNA)
