MANILA, Jan. 31 — Another Cabinet head is facing controversy — Agrarian Reform Secretary Virgilio de los Reyes — but a Malacanang official said that he (De los Reyes) too continues to enjoy the President’s trust and confidence.

“Secretary Virgilio de los Reyes continues to enjoy the President’s trust and confidence,” said Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. in a statement on Friday.

Coloma raised the issue in reaction to the call of nine Catholic bishops, led by Manila Auxillary Bishop Broderick Pabillo, to have President Benigno S. Aquino fire de los Reyes.

Pabillo, among others, explained in a letter to the President written last Jan. 22, that de los Reyes failed to meet the target distribution of the CARP (Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program) balance of 1.2 million hectares.

However, Coloma said that despite calls for de los Reyes to resign, the President had no plans of dismissing him.

“Like all Cabinet members, he (De los Reyes) must continually meet performance targets and standards that are aligned with the objectives of the PDP (Philippine Development Plan),” said Coloma.

Earlier this week, Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala, who also enjoys the President’s trust and confidence, was also urged by critics to resign following reports implicating him with rice smuggling. (PNA)
