9 killed in floods, landslides in Mindanao

MANILA, Jan. 12 (PNA) — Floods and landslides caused by heavy rains killed nine people in Mindanao, the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC) announced on Sunday.

Four others are still missing as of this posting.

An estimated 11,788 persons in Northern Mindanao, Southern Mindanao, and Caraga were forced to evacuate.

Five of the nine fatalities were killed in a landslide and another one died due to flood in Barangay Tubaon, Tarragona, Davao Oriental.

In Compostela Valley, one person was killed Sunday morning when a landslide hit the gold-rich area of Mount Diwalwal, Monkayo town.

Eight people were injured and three are still missing in that area. Two other persons died in Barangay Ngan, Compostela town.

In Agusan Del Norte, a certain Jolito Solima Agatia, 32, went missing after being swept by strong currents while crossing the Aciga River in Santiago town on Saturday.

In Dinagat Islands, Vice Governor Benglen Ecleo issued "Alert Level 3," which imposes pre-emptive or forced evacuation in areas that have high risks of floods and landslides. (PNA)
