DSWD rolls out distribution of non-food items

TACLOBAN CITY, Nov 17 –The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has rolled out its distribution of non-food items starting with the city of Tacloban on Saturday.

Secretary Dinky Soliman said that 5,000 hygiene kits were distributed to evacuees at the Tacloban City Convention Center, the biggest of the 27 evacuation sites in the city.

The relief department has also established camp management intervention and big evacuation centers have been assigned with managers.

The distribution of tents and tarps also started with evacuation centers as first recipients to be followed soon by villages.

The Secretary assured that other towns will also be provided with non-food items. These, she said are donations coming from humanitarian organizations and the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA).

More food items will be brought to Eastern Visayas to include blankets, dry goods and cooking utensils, she disclosed.

The DSWD also kicked off its food-for-work program in Tacloban City.

Meantime, the DSWD as of 6:00 p.m. Saturday already distributed 430, 435 food and rice packs, 46, 646 one-liter water and 84, 878 high-energy biscuits to typhoon-affected affected areas.

All the 138 barangays of Tacloban City, 40 towns of Leyte and nine out of 12 affected municipalities in Eastern Samar have been served. (PNA)
