MANILA, Oct. 2 — The additional monthly wage approved by the Hong Kong government for all foreign domestic workers, is a welcome development, OFW Family party list Rep. Roy Seneres said on Wednesday.

Seneres said the new rates, which is almost P500 in exchange rate can go a long, long way for every Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) working in the former British island colony.

“Good for our 200,000 OFW domestic helpers in Hong Kong because they can send more money to their loved ones,” Seneres said in a text message.

The good news will only apply to those who are about to enter the island and not to the present OFWs who are working but if their contract will be renewed, then they will now enjoy the additional perks.

For those who are about to leave and have signed a contract before September 30, the new adjustment will not also apply.

“Nakapirma na kasi sila sa kontrata na hindi pa nagtataas so they are not yet part of the new salary scheme but they will enjoy it when they sign new contracts after they have finish their last contract,” Seneres explained.

He said additional remittances translate to additional oil for the Philippine economy.

Under the Minimum Allowable Wages (MAW) of Hong Kong, the monthly wage of FDWs will be raised from HK 920 to HK$ 4,010.

The new law also provides increased in the monthly Food Allowance for FDWs that are not provided by their employers from HK875 to HK0. (PNA)
