La Mesa dam continues to overflow

MANILA, Aug. 21 — Due to rains brought by southwest monsoon enhanced by tropical storm "Maring", the water in La Mesa Dam in Quezon City continues to overflow on Wednesday, according to Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

As of 6 a.m. Wednesday, PAGASA hydrologist Oyie Pagulayan said that La mesa is still on red alert as the water level at the dam was already at 80.24 meters and continued to overflow.

La Mesa dam has no gates and its water will overflow to the Tullahan River then will traverse to several barangays in the cities of Quezon, Caloocan, Valenzuela and Malabon.

Pagulayan said that at least two major dams in Luzon have kept their gates open while the other two already closed.

"Medyo tumigil ang pag-ulan kung kaya't ang Ipo at Magat dam nagsara ng gates kaninang madaling araw habang ang Ambuklao at Binga at patuloy ang pagbukas ng gate," she explained.

She said the Ambuklao Dam in Benguet has two gates opened while Binga dam also in Benguet has two gates opened with 1.5 meters.

As of 6 a.m. Wednesday, Pagulayan said water level atAmbuklao was at 751.03 meters, which is 1.45 meters below the dam’s spilling level of 752 meters.

On the other hand, water level at Binga dam was at 572.97meters, or 3.71 meters short its spilling level of 575 meters, she noted.

Ambuklao and Binga's water flows downstream to the San Roque dam in Pangasinan, which can contain the water spillage.

San Roque Dam's water level stood at 266.32 meters as of 6 a.m. Wednesday, or way below its normal 280.00-meter level.

Pagulayan said that Magat Dam in Isabela already closed its gates around 12 a.m. while Ipo dam in Bulacan also closed its gate around 3:10 a.m.

She said the water level at Magat is 191.10 meters as of 6 a.m. below its critical level of 193 meters.

She said the Ipo dam’s water level was at 100.11 meters also below its spilling level of 100.80 as of 6 a.m. Wednesday.

Meanwhile, water levels of Angat dam in Bulacan, Pantabangan dam in Nueva Ecija, and Caliraya dam in Laguna are either below or at normal levels. (PNA)
