KABACAN, North Cotabato, Aug 8 -– The municipal council here has declared the town under a “state of calamity” after six of its 20 low-lying villages were inundated due to torrential rains.
David Don Saure, Kabacan municipal disaster risk reduction management officer, said close to 300 hectares of agricultural lands planted to rice were damaged by overflowing waters coming from the Rio Grande de Mindanao River.
The affected areas include the villages of Cuyapon, Kilagasan, Bangilan, Malamote, Lower and Upper Paatan,, all situated near the riverbank.
Collated data showed over 500 farmers were affected by the floods.
Under such situation, Saure said the local government unit can access 30 percent of its disaster emergency fund for relief and recovery.
He noted that the town government is planning to distribute palay seeds to the affected famers as soon as the subsidy is released. (PNA)
