DepEd launches search for outstanding teachers

MANILA, July 29 — “GURO ng PAG-ASA,”

This is the national search for outstanding teachers who teach their students the value of saving through financial education.

Gantimpala para sa Ulirang Pagtuturo ng Pag-iimpok at Araling Pansalapi (GURO ng PAGASA) is spearheaded by the Department of Education (DepEd) and Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP).

“The search will reward teachers who exhibited exemplary dedication in teaching the habit of savings using teaching guides in Edukasyon sa Pagpakatao (EsP), Edukasyong Pantahanan at Pangkabuhayan (EPP) and Araling Panlipunan (AP),” DepEd stressed in a statement.

“The search will officially start on October 2013 and culminate in January 2014, we want to drum up public awareness at this point so that many people will realize the importance of financial literacy,” said Sec. Armin Luistro in a statement.

Public elementary teachers — EsP, EPP and AP teachers — who have been using teaching guides on financial education.

DepEd said that subject teachers who garnered a performance rating of very satisfactory during the search period can be nominated.

“Principals and school heads or the district supervisor can nominate,” it added.

The search is divided into three parts: Instructional competence and teaching effectiveness, 75 points; Professional and community involvement, 25 points and Documentation of school-based sustainability program that promoted saving, 20 points.

Twelve finalists will be chosen as winners, three finalists coming from National Capital Region (NCR), Visayas and Mindanao.

“The top three national winners will receive P100, 000.00 each in cash prize, a medal and a complete set of computer with printer,” DepEd said.

“The schools of the national winners will each receive a projector with screen,” it added.

The department also said that the other national finalist will receive P50,000 and a certificate of recognition.

“Their respective schools will be given a plaque of recognition for their support on propagating financial education in the school and in the community” it stressed.

“A special prize of P10, 000.00 will be awarded to a student or to class who initiated sustained savings program that promote financial education and entrepreneurial activities in school or at home,” the department added. (PNA)
