173 endangered fauna seized in Quezon town

MANILA, July 29 — Operatives from the Quezon Provincial Police Office have intercepted a group engaged in the illegal animal trade and seized 173 mynah birds, three blue-naped parrots, four Palawan hornbills and five Palawan river otters during operations in Tayabas town Sunday night.

Radio reports said the checkpoint team intercepted the suspects around 8:00 p.m. Sunday.

The endangered species have been turned over to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) office in Quezon province.

A team from the DENR main office in Metro Manila was sent to the area.

While it was not immediately bared how many suspects were arrested, initial investigation showed the endangered species were transported aboard a motor banca and brought to a port in Lucena City befor it was intercepted. (PNA)
