TAGUM CITY, Davao del Norte, July 11 — Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Commissioner Atty. Jose Luis Gomez declared the province of Davao del Norte ready to host this year’s Mindanao Leg of the Batang Pinoy (BP) Games.
Gomez also hailed during his recent visit here the efforts of the province in preparing the modern Davao del Norte Sports and Tourism Complex (DNSTC) for the games on August 27-31, 2013.
After inspecting the world-class facility, he said the sports complex meets international standard and much qualified to host the first regional qualifier for the national championship of the PSC-Philippine Olympic Committee Batang Pinoy Games.
The facility, which passed the criteria of the world athletics body, the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), boasts of a state-of-the-art track and field oval that can host night games, aside from the modern swimming pool, softball/baseball field and basketball gym.
The Commissioner said the brightest student and out-of-school youth athletes will compete in 25 events during the elimination games to pick the best players for the national finals to be held in Zamboanga City on Dec. 3-7, 2013.
He revealed that Batang Pinoy is a local government unit (LGU)-based and non-school-based sports program that prioritizes out of school youth aged 15 and below.
Gomez acknowledged Governor Rodolfo del Rosario for facilitating this year’s hosting of the qualifying games, which, he said, will generate income from tourism and raise the profile of the province.
He also urged residents to bring out the whole family and make the most of the rare chance to witness the sporting events live in action. (PNA)
