Iloilo City barangays ready for October election

ILOILO CITY, June 11 — Members of the Liga ng mga Barangay in this city are now preparing for the holding of the barangay election in October this year, Liga president Carlos Guarin said Tuesday.

In the thick of preparations are the 180 city barangays, he noted.

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has set the barangay election on October 28.

Guarin said his members are not amenable to postponing the barangay election and stressed that the will of the majority must prevail over the wishes of a few persons who want to hold the barangay polls next year.

"The Comelec is ready, the barangay officials are ready and the electorates are ready. Why should we postpone a legal political exercise?", Guarin said.

The City Liga is also amenable to the manual canvassing of ballots right at the voting precinct level and the controversial precinct count optical scanner (PCOS) machines should not be used anymore, the Liga president and ex-officio city councilor said.

The city election landscape showed an early showdown in some hotly contested villages here. A close fight among contenders is expected in Barangay Navais, Mandurriao district and in Caingin, Jaro district.

Guarin said that after the barangay election and the winners are proclaimed, the Liga election will follow in December 2013 to determine the Liga officials and the new ex-officio member of the Sangguniang Panlungsod. (PNA)
