CEBU CITY, June 11 — Cebu’s men’s and women’s beach volleyball teams will start preparing next month for the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) 2013 beach tour China Xianning Open on Sept. 26-29, 2013.

Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) beach volley consultant Eric Lecain bared this following PSC Commissioner Jolly Gomez’s announcement that the top two teams in the recent POC-PSC Philippine National Games (PNG) will be sent to the AVC.

In the PNG, Jonrey Sasing and Edward Ybanez beat Mandaue City’s Jade Becaldo and Mike Abria to defend the men’s title.

Jusabelle Brillo and Apple Saraum defeated a fellow Cebu team, Suzette Panis and Raphril Aguilar, in the women’s title.

Although it has been decided by the Philippine Volleyball Federation Board of directors that the PNG winners will be the automatic members of the national team, there still hasn’t been any official announcement from the Philippine Volleyball Federation (PVF) president Gener Dungo declaring the Cebuanos as members of the national team.

While waiting for the official announcement, Lecain said he is already preparing the necessary documents needed to bring the teams to China.

Lecain said he is also planning to promote beach volleyball to the key cities in Cebu.

According to Lecain, the sport is already growing in Cebu and it’s about time he works on the next step, which is to go around the province to promote it.

”I want to get the league started first, get as many as I can to start playing on a regular basis, then to a competition tour throughout Cebu Province,” he said.

To do that, he has already been talking to several local government units (LGUs) in coming up with a tournament then a grassroots program.

”Starting July, we will start staging tournaments around Cebu then there will be several different types of events through July and August,” Lecain said.

Mandaue City has already expressed its intent to put up a grassroots developmental program in beach volley and Lecain plans to invite Lapu-Lapu City and Talisay City as well. (PNA)
