DAVAO CITY, June 3 — The Dept. of Education (DepEd) is hiring nearly 3,000 more teachers, the highest number of teaching slots in the department's history.

Jenelito Atillo, DepEd 11 spokesperson, said that the department has approved 61,510 teaching positions for the school year 2013-2014, which is a huge increase compared to previous hiring of an average of about 10,000 teachers.

He said in Region XI alone DepEd is seeking to hire 2,923 more teachers, compared to the previous years when they were hiring only about 500 teachers.

Atillo said that this does not include those hired by the local school board and those hired by the respective DepEd offices in the region.(PNA)
