MANILA, May 25 — While stressing that no modifications on its standing "rules of engagement" in the West Philippine Sea are being done yet, Armed Forces spokesperson Brig. Gen. Domingo Tutaan Saturday said these guidelines are being updated to suit conditions.

"We have a standing ROE and as necessary these are updated to suit prevailing situations…," he added.

Tutaan made this statement in reply to a question if the AFP is indeed updating its ROE following the country's maritime dispute with China.

The AFP spokesperson added the ROE is designed to be flexible as not to hamper ground commanders in the implementation.

Tutaan said provisions contained in the ROE are possible actions, not always aggressive, in dealing with certain situations.

Col. Edgard Arevalo, Philippine Navy spokesperson for West Philippine Sea issues, said the Chinese frigate earlier spotted off Ayungin Shoal was not seen by Filipino patrols Friday and Saturday.

However, the two China Maritime Surveillance ships are still there, Arevalo said. (PNA)
