MANILA,May 20 — The first day of Brigada Eskwela, the annual school cleaning program of the Dept. of Education (DepEd), started Monday at the Philippine School for the Deaf and goes by the theme “Isang Dekada ng Bayanihan sa Paaralan.”

Education Sec. Armin Luistro said this is the first day that schools all over the Philippines prepare to do maintenance work in all public schools in the country.

“We encourage every Filipino and other nationalities in the country with Filipino friends to join the Brigada Eskwela,” Luistro stressed.

During the Brigada Eskwela, Luistro provided an update regarding the status of schools in the country.

“There are 40,000 schools yet to be finished, others already started construction –one story buildings will probably be finished before June 3, two to three story buildings will take a few more months to finish,” said Luistro in an interview.

“We hired 61,500 teachers this year, more than 200 divisions started hiring.” he added.

He also mentioned that there are openings for positions without specializations and DepEd divisions constantly hire teachers.

The 61,500 teachers work full time, passed the licensure exam, teacher ranking, interview and class demo.

Luistro said that they will finish the problem on lack of facilities by constructing bathrooms and classrooms that will be finished in December. (PNA)
